The Problem - The Wiley Coyote The coyote is one of the most adaptable animals in the world. The coyote can change its breeding habits, diet and social dynamics to survive in a wide variety of habitats. The coyote is found throughout North America from eastern Alaska to New England and south through Mexico to Panama. It originally ranged primarily in the northwest corner of the US, but it has adapted to the changes caused by man and, in the past 200 years, has been steadily extending its range. Because coyotes are opportunistic and adapt so readily, they will continue to expand their range and food supply. These carnivores are dangerous predators that kill
livestock and cause significant damage to farmers. Coyotes are formidable in the field where they enjoy keen vision and a strong sense of smell. They can run up to 40 miles (64 kilometers) an hour. Coyotes also feed on fruits and vegetables and cost produce farmers thousands of dollars. When coyotes deplete their natural food supply, they have to find something else to eat. Coyotes will feed on whatever is most readily available and easy to obtain. In suburban areas they prey upon unprotected pets, including outdoor house cats and unsupervised domestic dogs. Because coyotes utilize so many different food sources, they have adapted to and live in a variety of habitats including urban and heavily populated areas. . They have even colonized cities
like Los Angeles. Coyote populations are likely at an all-time high.
Coyotes are opportunistic predators and, given the chance, they will go after small children who are in the size range of their normal prey. These urban coyotes have lost their natural fear of humans. In southern California, coyotes attacked three small children within a 5 day period in May 2008. A coyote grabbed a 2-year-old girl by the head and tried to drag her from her driveway. The girl's mother chased the coyote away. In a similar incident in a nearby park, a nanny frightened off a coyote that was trying to run off with a two year old child in his mouth. The next day, another child was stalked by a coyote before the toddler's father scared it off. In the past nine months,
five children have been bitten in that area. Wildlife officials are warning parents to be more cautious around the increasingly bold animals. Officials want to eliminate as many as possible because they represent a serious threat to safety. They are attacking children right next to their parents. In 1981, when a coyote attacked and killed a 3-year-old in the front yard of her southern California home, trappers searched the area and killed 57 coyotes within a mile of her house.
The coyote mates once a year between February and April. Two months after mating, the female gives birth to between one and nineteen pups. The average litter size is usually around six. When a coyote mates with a dog, their offspring is called coydogs. Coydogs
mate several times a year like dogs, therefore, contributing to the increase in population. Being half dog, the coydog loses the fear of man. This makes him even more dangerous than a coyote. The coydog will kill just to be killing, while a coyote kills for food. The coyote is a smart, cunning predator that requires a smart, serious solution. The Solution - "The Coyote Eliminator"
